Doctoral Network on the adoption of Hydrogen mEtalLurgy In the climate-neutral production Of Steel - HELIOS

HELIOS Participation at the SDEWES Conference Underscores Project’s Commitment to Sustainability

HELIOS researcher Rim Boulahya from the SAM research group at KU Leuven took part in the 19th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) held in Rome, Italy. Boulahya presented her research entitled “Integrated Sustainability Assessment Framework for Emergent Hydrogen-Based Steel Production Technology,” which contributes to the ongoing efforts of the HELIOS MSCA Doctoral Network.

The conference gathered experts and researchers from diverse scientific domains focused on advancing sustainable innovation. In collaboration with fellow SAM research group member Ponnapat Watjanatepin, Boulahya represented the HELIOS project and engaged in discussions surrounding cutting-edge research and technology in energy and environmental systems.

Her presentation focused on developing a comprehensive framework to assess the sustainability performance of emerging hydrogen-based steelmaking technology – one of the core research areas within the HELIOS initiative, which aims to accelerate the transition to a climate-neutral industry.

Participation in the event not only allowed for the dissemination of HELIOS project outcomes but also provided valuable opportunities for networking and future collaboration within the scientific community. Reflecting on the experience, Boulahya emphasized the value of engaging directly with international experts and expressed her intent to participate in future editions of the SDEWES conference series.

The HELIOS project, funded under the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, continues to support early-stage researchers in developing innovative, sustainable solutions for industrial decarbonisation across Europe.
