Doctoral Network on the adoption of Hydrogen mEtalLurgy In the climate-neutral production Of Steel - HELIOS

Key information

Conference

This conference provides an international forum for discussing recent advances in hydrogen-based steelmaking, spanning topics from process fundamentals and industrial integration to advanced diagnostics, by-product valorization, and sustainability assessment.

World-leading experts in hydrogen-based steelmaking will be invited to share their latest insights through keynote lectures. In addition, the ten doctoral researchers of the HELIOS Doctoral Network will present highlights of their work.

The conference welcomes participants from both academia and industry, offering opportunities to present research through oral and poster contributions. A concluding panel discussion will bring together diverse perspectives to explore how hydrogen can shape the future of steelmaking.

Topics

Within the field of hydrogen-based steelmaking, we welcome presentations on the following topics:

  • Process fundamentals: Direct reduction with hydrogen (H-DRI), hydrogen plasma-based reduction, process thermodynamics and kinetics
  • Process integration & industrial implementation: Reactor design, scale-up challenges, retrofitting existing plants for hydrogen use, integration with electric arc furnaces (EAF), pilot plants and industrial demonstration projects
  • Advanced sensing, monitoring and digitalization: In-situ sensors for high-temperature hydrogen environments, gas composition monitoring (H₂, H₂O, CO, CO₂), digital twins of hydrogen-based steel plants, AI and machine learning for process control, process data analytics and optimization
  • Circularity & sustainability: Recovery of metals from dust, slag, and residues, slag valorization, hydrogen-rich off-gas utilization, industrial symbiosis, zero-waste steelmaking concepts
  • Life cycle assessment & sustainability metrics: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of hydrogen steel pathways, comparison with conventional and alternative routes, social and economic sustainability indicators, standards and certification for “green steel”

Registration fee

The registration fee is €200 for non-HELIOS members.
